According to Goal, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp remains in contact with Mario Gotze – but a reunion at Anfield has been ruled out.
It’s stated that Gotze still has huge respect for Klopp from their time together at Borussia Dortmund. The pair still talk regularly, and Gotze has just become available.
Dortmund have confirmed that Gotze will leave the club when his contract expires this summer, and some had wondered whether a Liverpool reunion with Klopp could materialise.
However, this report states that Klopp has no plans to sign Gotze despite their relationship. Liverpool have ‘moved past’ the German, and there will be no move this summer or in the future.
Klopp did want Gotze in 2016, but he turned Liverpool down for a return to Dortmund. Klopp seemed disappointed at the time, and hasn’t moved again for him since.
Gotze made his name under Klopp, emerging as a top young talent with Dortmund. A 2013 move to Bayern materialised, which Klopp allegedly felt was a big mistake.
Gotze went on to score the winner in the 2014 World Cup final, but his time at Bayern was a huge disappointment. He has never been able to get back on track, with his second Dortmund spell petering out.
Now 27, Gotze is set to become a free agent. A move to Liverpool may have made sense once upon a time, but Klopp isn’t allowing a personal relationship to cloud his judgement. Their rapport will remain strong, but they won’t be working together at Anfield if this report is true.
