Nathaniel Phillips is set to start for Liverpool against Leicester City at the weekend, the Daily Mail suggest.
Liverpool’s injury worries worsened yesterday, as Rhys Williams was left out of England’s under-21 side as a precaution.
Williams’ injury issue is not expected to be a serious one, but England were not prepared to take a risk with him.
The youngster’s knock seemingly could keep him out for the weekend, with the Mail saying that Jurgen Klopp has decided to start Phillips.
Phillips featured for Liverpool against West Ham United recently, and with the Reds’ injury problems mounting he could now be given a run of games.
Williams has generally been backed in Europe, but the more physical Phillips now seems to be emerging as his first choice to play in the league at this current moment in time.
Liverpool are without Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez currently, which leaves their centre-back options very limited.
Phillips, who Klopp described as ‘sensational’ to Sky Sports, actually nearly left Liverpool in the summer, but the German boss is likely to be delighted that the towering defender is still around now.
If Phillips is backed to start he could face the toughest test of his Liverpool career, as Klopp’s men take on top of the table Leicester City on Sunday.
