According to The Mirror, Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool medical staff are thought to be ‘horrified’ at the prospect of Virgil van Dijk playing at the European Championships.

Klopp recently suggested that it is highly unlikely that Van Dijk or Joe Gomez will be fit to play having both suffered major knee injuries.

However, Van Dijk is now stepping up his return and has targeted the Euros for a shock return, meaning he would be back playing in June.

Netherlands boss Frank de Boer has allegedly promised Van Dijk that there will be a place in the squad for him having learned that the defender is pushing for an inclusion.

That is horrifying for Liverpool, who want Van Dijk to focus on a full pre-season at Liverpool before using the start of next season as his return.

The 29-year-old has never played at a major tournament for the Netherlands and may want to do so before he enters his 30’s.

The idea of Van Dijk leaving Liverpool’s medical staff and playing games with short turnarounds is understandably concerning, as the defender would be under real risk.

This may become a real club v country row for Liverpool, who won’t want to frustrate their star defender but also won’t want to risk seeing him pick up another injury this summer.
