Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer is reportedly closing in on a move to former club Koln.

According to Get German Football News, Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer is closing in on a move back to former club Koln.

Wimmer, 24, joined Spurs from German side Koln in the summer of 2015, having turned out 70 times for the Bundesliga outfit.

The Austrian international arrived as cover for Jan Vertonghen in the role as Tottenham’s left-footed left back, and made ten Premier League appearances for Spurs last season when the Belgium international suffered an injury.

Having filled in admirably, Wimmer was handed a new five-year contract over the summer – but his season hasn’t gone to plan so far.

After starting the season as Tottenham’s fourth-choice defender thanks to Mauricio Pochettino’s faith in teenager Cameron Carter-Vickers, Wimmer has played just five times so far this season – and speculation surrounds his future.

German newspaper Kicker reported earlier this week that former club Koln wanted to re-sign Wimmer, as they’ve agreed to let defender Mergim Mavraj join Bundesliga rivals Hamburg in January.

Now, Get German Football News report that Wimmer is now set to re-join Koln on loan next month, with a deal reportedly close to completion.

Tottenham may subsequently look for another defender in January, but it’s worth noting that Wimmer is in contention to start for Spurs against Watford this weekend due to Vertonghen’s suspension.

Wimmer may now have another chance to impress manager Pochettino, but after a disappointing first half of the season, Wimmer may jump at the chance to play regular first-team football with his former club.

Do you think Tottenham should keep Wimmer?
