Tottenham Hotspur target Andre Gomes is reportedly asking to leave Barcelona.
According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes wants to leave the club this month amid reports of renewed interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
Gomes, 24, emerged as a young star in his native Portugal with Benfica, and his impressive displays handed him a 2014 move to Valencia.
The midfielder starred in his two years at the Estadio Mestalla, prompting Barcelona to splash out a huge fee to land Gomes, paying €35million up front and €20million in add-ons, bringing the total to €55million (then £45million, as reported by AS).
Gomes hasn’t lived up to expectations with Barca though, as after a disappointing first season, he has started just two La Liga games this season, and looks set for an exit.
Catalan newspaper Sport report that Gomes has now asked manager Ernesto Valverde to let him leave the club during this month’s transfer window, in a desperate attempt to play first-team football.
Gomes knows that he needs to be playing in order to feature prominently for Portugal at the World Cup this summer, and whether it’s permanent or on loan, he simply wants to leave the Camp Nou and play.
It’s noted that Gomes is actually having disagreements with agent Jorge Mendes over his next destination, and is even taking advice from other parties on where to head next if Barca do grant his exit.
The reports of Gomes pushing for a move will be interesting to Spurs fans, given that The Express reported just days ago that Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a new move for Gomes having failed to land him in August – and Mauricio Pochettino’s chances of landing Gomes may have just taken another boost.
