Liverpool’s lack of defensive cover could cost them as they battle Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Jurgen Klopp wants Liverpool to sign a number of new defenders in the summer transfer window after finding himself having to cope with an injury crisis that threatens their pursuit of a first Premier League title, as reported by The Sun.

The Reds boss has had to deal with the absence of Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Trent Alexander-Armstrong in recent weeks, forcing the likes of James Milner and Jordan Henderson to drop into his backline for a number of crucial fixtures.

Furthermore, Nathaniel Clyne was loaned out to Bournemouth in the January transfer window, a decision that has been subject to plenty of criticism given the lack of alternative right-backs at Liverpool’s disposal.

As a result, The Sun claims that Klopp is already making plans to avoid a similar scenario by asking the Merseyside giants to provide him with a couple of defensive additions – having been left frustrated by the lack of signings last month.

It is not certain which players in particular the former Borussia Dortmund coach is keen to recruit but a right-back and a centre-half wouldn’t go amiss.

There is a lack of competition for Andy Robertson on the left too, given that Klopp is clearly unconvinced by the habitual benchwarmer Alberto Moreno.
