Roma stunned the world today as they appointed Jose Mourinho as their manager, seemingly out of absolutely nowhere.

Paulo Fonseca’s departure was confirmed earlier today, and Roma wasted no time in confirming htat Mourinho had been landed as his replacement.

Mourinho has only been out of a job for a couple of weeks having lost his job at Tottenham Hotspur, but is already back in the game with Roma.

What’s interesting though is that this move has actually boosted Tottenham ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Telegraph report that Mourinho was due around £16million in compensation from Tottenham, which amount to around 18 months of his salary.

That was dependent on Mourinho being out of work though, and with his Roma move now confirmed, Spurs are looking at saving around £13million of that proposed £16million outlay.

Mourinho will likely only begin his new job in July, meaning Spurs are still on the hook for a couple of months yet, but this is undoubtedly great news for Spurs.

That money could be put towards the transfer kitty for Tottenham’s next manager, with Daniel Levy yet to find the man to replace Mourinho moving forward.

Whether it goes on transfers or not, it’s an eight-figure chunk of cash that isn’t going out of Tottenham after all, and could be put towards the future of the club rather than being used to pay for a past mistake.
