The Tottenham Hotspur defender is a reported transfer target for Manchester United.

According to a report from the Sun, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been given the green light to sign a centre-back in January, and Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld is his number one target.
The Red Devils have been woefully poor defensively this season, and they currently have the joint worst defensive record out of the top 13 teams in the division.
Tottenham centre-back Alderweireld would undoubtedly improve United’s defence.
The Belgian’s contract with Spurs expires in the summer, and the Sun claims that Mourinho is confident that £40 million will be enough to tempt the north London outfit into selling.

Alderweireld, 29, joined Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £11.5 million, and he has since gone on to establish himself as one of the world’s best central defenders.
Spurs might just be tempted into selling the Belgium international in January, rather than lose him for nothing next year, and if he does end up moving to Old Trafford, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for United.
