According to The Independent, Manchester United wanted to sign Virgil van Dijk before he left Southampton for Liverpool.

It has been reported that United wanted to secure the services of Van Dijk from Premier League rivals Southampton in January 2018.

However, Jose Mourinho, who was then the manager of the Red Devils, decided against the move as he felt that he did not need a central defender at the time, according to the report.

The Netherlands international would go on to join Liverpool in January 2018 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £75 million.

Big miss

Van Dijk, 28 is one of the best central defenders in the world, and the Dutchman has taken his game to another level.

While the Red Devils struggle to finish in the top four of the Premier League, with Van Dijk at the heart of their defence, the Merseyside outfit won the Champions League last season and came very close to clinching the league title as well.

United’s loss has been Liverpool’s gain.
