A report in The Sun has suggested that Jose Mourinho has earmarked Tottenham’s Eric Dier as the ideal successor for Michael Carrick in the Manchester United midfield.

The Sun reports that United have identified the Spurs star as one of their transfer targets for the summer, with Mourinho set to receive plenty of financial backing from the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Mourinho reportedly deems the 23-year-old to be the perfect player to fill the void that Carrick will leave in the future, despite The Sun suggesting that negotiating a deal with Tottenham will be extremely difficult.

It would certainly be no surprise if Spurs dug their heels in and did everything they could to keep Dier where he is. The England international brings a level of versatility that few in the Premier League can contend with, often playing at centre-back, holding midfield and central midfield as if any of the three are his strongest position.

Replacing him would be extremely difficult for Tottenham – who value Dier at £40 million (via The Sun) – so it would surely take a stunning offer for Daniel Levy to even consider giving a deal the green light.

If Spurs are willing to listen to audacious bids, they may perhaps be able to drive the price up due to the fact that Carrick’s current contract expires at the end of the season (via Guardian).

If United have made their minds up that they want to replace the veteran with the Tottenham star this summer, and thus, let the 35-year-old’s deal expire, Spurs will know how desperate United will be to get a move done, so can potentially make sure they get an astronomical amount for the midfielder – if they are at all interested in selling in the first place, that is.
