Report: Jorge Mendes could help Wolves sign £52.9m World Cup winner

Wolverhampton Wanderers finished off another really impressive season in the top flight. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men even made it into the quarter-finals of the Europa League which is no easy feat, especially for a side who were in the Championship not long ago.

Wolves’ transfer activity this summer hasn’t quite been as good as they would have hoped. They are yet to make a big signing and have already lost a massive player in Matt Doherty to Spurs.

Jonny Otto’s injury has left them with a predicament, but it looked like Wolves had found their man. Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles was reportedly very close to sealing a move to the Molineux (Sky Sports) yet the Gunners changed their mind over the weekend and he is going nowhere (Mirror).

That is a big blow for Santo as the Arsenal youngster would have covered both full-back positions, both wings and central midfield. It is not easy to find a player as versatile as Maitland-Niles; something that Wolves are struggling with at the moment.

The immediate priority for the Wanderers is a new player at left wing-back. Jorge Mendes has helped the club get a number of quality players and it looks like he is trying to bring in another this summer.

Le10 Sport claim that the super-agent associated with Wolves is working on a deal to sign Atletico Madrid’s World Cup-winning attacker Thomas Lemar. Mendes has an excellent relationship with Atleti according to the report, which could help secure a deal.

Lemar was once tipped to be the next big thing in world football. The Frenchman was a part of the Monaco team alongside Kylian Mbappe that dethroned Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

Mbappe is on his way to the very top but Lemar’s career has stagnated. Since his £52.9 million move to Atletico Madrid in 2018 (Goal), he has scored just three goals and has provided six assists in 72 games in all competitions.

Atletico would surely like to cut their losses and move him on but they will get nowhere near what they paid for him two years ago. Wolves will have to be smart with this deal if they really are interested.

If Mendes can get Wolves Lemar for a bargain fee, he could thrive under Santo, as he did under Leonardo Jardim at Monaco where he first made his name.
