The midfielder has long been linked with a Premier League move and it now appears St Mary’s will be his destination.

Feyenoord had rejected Southampton’s initial £10 million bid but the South Coast club returned with another offer – nearer to the £12 million mark – and a deal was close, reported the Daily Mail yesterday.

It appears an agreement has now been agreed with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf last night reporting that Jordy Clasie is due in Southampton today, to sign a deal.

The report touches on the contract the Feyenoord captain is set to receive, claiming he will earn around £1.8 million a year at the Saints.

The 24-year old appeared 43 times last season and has been a central figure for the Dutch club since his breakthrough in 2011.

His tenacity and technical ability won over the fans soon after his emergence, and the Southampton faithful should be excited at the prospect of his arrival.

What will he add?

Morgan Schneiderlin’s departure has left a void in central midfield for Southampton and Clasie could well be the man to fill it.

He isn’t a huge physical presence in there – standing at 5’6 – but alongside the powerful Victor Wanyama, could form an effective double pivot.

Short passing and aggression in retrieving the ball are his main traits and the Dutchman will bring valuable energy to the Southampton midfield.

His height could potentially be an issue and it remains to be seen if he can cope with the physical demands of English football, but there is no doubting Southampton are close to adding a very useful talent to their squad.
