It has been reported by the British tabloid that the former Liverpool and Swansea City man fractured his left hand on Thursday while trying to break up a training ground bust-up between teammates Jamaal Lascelles and Mohamed Diame.
According to the report, the 25-year-old central midfielder now has his left hand in a cast and will be monitored before Newcastle’s Premier League game against Southampton away from home at St. Mary’s Stadium next weekend.
Shelvey is an important player for Newcastle, and the midfielder’s performances will be key in helping the Magpies finish in the top 10 of the Premier League this season.
There are issues with the 25-year-old’s temperament, but in terms of talent and quality, there can be no doubt.
Rafael Benitez’s side are ninth in the Premier League table at the moment with 10 points from seven matches.
Newcastle are playing in the Premier League this season after winning automatic promotion from the Championship at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.
Shelvey joined Newcastle from Swansea in January 2016 for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £12 million.
