Jordan Jones is set to arrive at Sunderland from Rangers but there are doubts about whether Kevin Nisbet and Ross Stewart will join the winger at the Stadium of Light, according to the Northern Echo.

A former Middlesbrough winger born into the sand and smoke of Redcar beach, Jones will be packing his bags and returning to the north east before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has opened the door for the Northern Ireland international to join Sunderland on an initial loan deal until the end of the season.

And if Jones can rediscover the form that made him one of the Scottish Premiership’s most influential, creative attackers at Kilmarnock, the twinkle-toed 26-year-old could add a dash of daring magic to an often-toothless Black Cats frontline.

Whether Jones will be joined on Wearside by two more Scotland-based forwards, however, remains to be seen.

The Northern Echo claim that Sunderland have held talks with Kevin Nisbet; the Hibernian hotshot who has been a revelation under ex-Stadium of Light coach Jack Ross at Easter Road.

But a deal is understood to be unlikely at this stage, with Birmingham City making a £2 million offer for the penalty-box poacher (Sun).

Given that funds are tight in League One, Sunderland are unlikely to match that bid.

The Echo believes that a deal for Ross County forward Ross Stewart could still happen, although talks have stalled.

Sunderland were hoping to haggle down a £500,000 price-tag with Stewart out of contract at the end of the season, while some have suggested that the relegation-threatened Stags would prefer to keep their star forward until the summer. Even if that means losing him for free.
