Aston Villa’s John Terry is reportedly delaying a decision on his future.
According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa defender John Terry will wait until the end of the season to decide his future with the club.
Villa pulled off a coup last summer to sign Terry on a free transfer following his exit from Chelsea, with Steve Bruce immediately making him Villa captain in a bid to win promotion back to the Premier League.
Terry has so far played in 21 of Villa’s 31 Championship games, helping Bruce’s men occupy an automatic promotion spot, and the hope is that Terry will now captain Villa back to the top flight.
However, the 37-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and it’s believed that he will wait until the campaign is over before deciding his future, despite having a 12-month option in his contract.
Emotional decision
In most circumstances, another crack at the Premier League – something Terry won five times with Chelsea – would be appealing, especially in the latter stages of his career.
However, Terry’s emotional pull with Chelsea led to him turning down Swansea for Villa last summer, as he was adamant that he wouldn’t play against Chelsea, having spent more than 20 years with the Blues.
If Villa win promotion, then they will be facing Chelsea next season, and playing against his former club may just put Terry off from extending his deal with Villa.
That will leave manager Bruce sweating, as whilst Terry is approaching 40, his leadership skills and reading of the game haven’t waned in recent years, and he remains a key part of the Villa side, but whether he can be tempted to stay remains to be seen.
