Aston Villa reportedly decided not to offer John Terry a new deal despite the defender being keen to stay next season.

Terry surprised many last summer when he decided to join Steve Bruce’s side in the wake of his emotional departure from Chelsea. But he showed absolutely no signs of being a player who had one eye on the end of his career as he became a stalwart of the side and helped Villa reach the play-off final.

Unfortunately for Bruce’s men, their trip to Wembley ended in agony as Fulham ran out 1-0 winners to book their ticket back to the Premier League. And it appears that the club are now making some ruthless decisions in an attempt to balance the books.
The Mail reports that Villa are considering making some fairly drastic cuts, and it would have surprised few when it was confirmed that the 37-year-old was leaving the club after just one season.

Getting rid of Terry’s wages will certainly help the club in a financial sense, but losing a leader with his experience is undoubtedly a massive blow to Bruce’s side – and the fans may fear that it will have an extremely negative impact on the team’s fortunes next season as the centre-back is undoubtedly the kind of player that would have been even more determined to deliver that promotion having got within touching distance this past season.
