Celtic are trying to bring John McGinn to Parkhead, but could end up waiting and signing the midfielder ahead of next summer.

According to a report from the Daily Record, John McGinn is prepared to wait until his Hibernian contract expires before he seals his dream move to Celtic on a free transfer next summer.

The Hoops have clearly had the midfielder near the top of their wishlist this summer, with the Record reporting that the Scottish Premiership champions have made a number of bids for the 23-year-old, with the most recent worth £2 million.

The Record adds that Hibs value McGinn at £4 million, but McGinn is determined to make the move to Parkhead and thus, is preparing himself to potentially wait until January when he can sign a pre-contract deal with the Bhoys.

It must be something of a boost for Brendan Rodgers that McGinn is reportedly so keen to make the move to Celtic at some stage. While he is a boyhood fan who has links to the club with his grandfather being a former Hoops chairman, there appears to have been plenty of links suggesting that he may head elsewhere during the last couple of years.

It will be interesting to see whether McGinn’s reported stance does anything to change Hibs’ mind. If they fear that they are going to lose the Scotland international for nothing next summer, then perhaps they may be more willing to compromise over the fee that Celtic pay during this window instead.

The fact that the new season is appearing swiftly on the horizon may leave Neil Lennon urging the Hibs hierarchy to do all they can to hold onto the youngster at this stage of the window, but losing him on a free must be slightly concerning given the fees that have already been put on the table this summer.
