New Rangers man Joey Barton has been suspended by Rangers for at least three weeks following a meeting with manager Mark Warburton on Monday, according to Sky Sports.

Always a figure of controversy, Barton’s suspension comes after his row with Warburton and teammate Andy Halliday following the 5-1 Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic earlier in the month.

The 34-year-old midfielder did not feature in the 0-0 draw with Ross County at Ibrox over the weekend and he will not be allowed to train or play with the Rangers squad for the next three weeks.

This rules the one-time England international out for league matches against Aberdeen and Partick Thistle and the Scottish League Cup quarter-final match against Queen of the South on Tuesday.

However, whether Barton is brought straight back into the team following his ban remains to be seen as Warburton and the player himself have mostly declined to comment on the situation.

When asked if he was still a Rangers player, Barton told Sky Sports News HQ: “I think so,” but couldn’t comment on any further details surrounding the issue.
