According to The Mirror, Liverpool defender Joel Matip is struggling to prove his fitness ahead of Sunday’s game with Manchester United.

The Reds saw United move to the top of the Premier League table on Tuesday night with a 1-0 win at Burnley, teeing up Sunday’s game perfectly.

Liverpool have been flat of late, scoring just once in games against West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle United and Southampton whilst picking up only two points in that run.

That has allowed United to become real challengers for the title, and Liverpool need to be ready for Sunday’s game – especially defensively.

With no Joe Gomez or Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool are struggling at the back, and it looks like they may be without Matip too.

Matip picked up an adductor injury in the draw with West Brom and hasn’t played since, with real hope that he would be back to face United.

However, it’s now suggested that Matip is running out of time to be back, given that he is yet to resume full first-team training ahead of Sunday’s game.

Jurgen Klopp would allegedly need to see him in two first-team training sessions in order for him to play, whereas he is only in ‘specially-prepared sessions’ with Liverpool physios.

With little time to prove his fitness, it seems that the 29-year-old is struggling to get himself ready for the game – and would leave Klopp with a major dilemma at centre back.
