Celtic talent spotter Mick Doherty will not be joining the Championship side, reports have suggested.

Paul Cook manager of Wigan Athletic looks on prior to the Sky Bet League One match between Wigan Athletic and A.F.C. Wimbledon at DW Stadium on April 28, 2018 in Wigan, England.

Celtic talent spotter Mick Doherty is seemingly not going to be joining Wigan Athletic, with The Sun on Sunday (23/12; page 61) reporting that Joe Royle has blocked Paul Cook’s move for the Hoops man.

The Sun reported in November that the Latics boss wanted to bring close friend Doherty to the DW Stadium ahead of the club’s first window since the new owners’ takeover was finalised.

But it appears that Doherty will not be taking over as Wigan’s new chief scout, with The Sun on Sunday (23/12; page 61) suggesting that director Royle has blocked the move for the Parkhead figure.

Doherty has been at Celtic since last year, and he will be hoping that he can provide Brendan Rodgers with some inspired target suggestions over the coming weeks.

The Hoops have started to take control of the title race in the Scottish Premiership with their 3-0 win over Dundee on Saturday taking Rodgers’ men three points clear of Aberdeen.

But despite their recent run taking them top, they still have some issues to address in the transfer market, particularly up front. So perhaps Doherty may be able to put forward a couple of exciting names that give Celtic some targets to pursue and leave Wigan ruing the decision to not bring him in.
