Lyon are set to complete a pre-contract agreement with talented French forward Jean-Philippe Mateta this week, much to the disappointment of Tottenham Hotspur.

L’Equipe report that Lyon have agreed a five-year deal with the player to join from Chateauroux in the New Year.

The Rhone club will pay €5 million (£4.25 million) to bring him to the club and the deal should be formalised shortly.

Tottenham Hotspur missed out in pursuit of this talent in the summer.

His agent even confirmed that Spurs made a move and had been rejected, stating to Foot Mercato:

“Concerning Tottenham, it is quite clear that the player does not want to go abroad. He is 19, he does not want to skip steps.”

The 19-year-old has attracted the interest of Spurs in recent times – especially after he cracked in a hat-trick against Le Havre in a 5-2 win.

It was then reported by Foot-Sur7 that Spurs would continue to be keeping tabs on his progress ahead of a winter move – with Fiorentina, Rennes and Montpellier also interested in the player.

But Spurs will, it seems, not have the good fortune of bringing in the player – who has scored five goals in six games so far this season.
