Tottenham Hotspur are being strongly linked with a move for Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard – but they now face a new battle for his signature.

The Express report that Tottenham are ramping up their interest in signing Vestergaard as Southampton fight to keep him.

Vestergaard has just over a year left on his contract, and Tottenham may be sensing a repeat of the bargain deal they struck for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg last summer.

It’s not hard to see the parallels; both Danes, they’ve both become Saints favourites after arriving from Germany, and both have had contract situations that appeal to Spurs.

Tall and dominant in the air, Vestergaard could bring a real presence to a flimsy Tottenham defence, but Jose Mourinho and co now face a threat in their pursuit of Vestergaard.

Tuttomercatoweb now report that Roma have been making preliminary contact into a deal for Vestergaard – ironically because they’re ready to offload ex-Spurs man Federico Fazio.

Tiago Pinto is working on new signings, and Vestergaard is thought to be a prime target for Roma, with the idea of adding him to Chris Smalling, Roger Ibanez, Marash Kumbulla and Gianluca Mancini.

Roma already have a number of defensive options both for now and the future; you can make a pretty strong argument that their back line is stronger than Tottenham’s.

That may play into Tottenham’s hands if they do move for Vestergaard, whilst the chance to reunite with Hojbjerg may well be appealing too.
