According to the Leicester Mercury, James Maddison would have to demand an exit from Leicester City in order to join Arsenal.
Arsenal are seeking a new number 10 this summer with Martin Odegaard back at Real Madrid, and Maddison is thought to be a target.
That seems pretty lofty given that Arsenal may not have huge money to spend this summer, but it would surely set pulses racing in North London.
Arsenal’s interest in Maddison
Reports first emerged of Arsenal’s interest in Maddison earlier this week, with Football.London and the Daily Mail both reporting their interest.
Leicester allegedly want a £70million fee for Maddison, and it seems hugely unlikely that Arsenal will be able to come up with that kind of cash.
Maddison racked up 11 goals and six assists last season despite carrying injuries, and looks set to be one of the Premier League’s top creators for years to come.
Leicester take a strong stance
It’s now claimed that Leicester would need a ‘huge’ bid in order to sell Maddison this summer, and they would expect him to make it clear that he wants to leave.
That places a lot of power in Maddison’s hands. He’s spent three successful seasons with Leicester, and may risk ruining his relationship with fans if he demands an exit.
Additionally, Leicester have Europa League football whilst Arsenal don’t have any European football at all, meaning forcing a move would be quite bold from the playmaker.
