Both Southampton and Aston Villa are able to meet Barnsley’s valuation of the player, according to the Sun.

James Bree may quit Barnsley for Southampton or Aston Villa, according to a report on page 66 of Saturday’s Sun newspaper.

Right-back Bree has attracted interest from a string of clubs in England’s top two divisions, although HITC sources understand Villa to be in pole position.

The Sun, however, claims the Villans face competition from Southampton – as both are able to meet Barnsley’s £4 million valuation of the 19-year-old.

Villa are keen to strengthen in Bree’s position, with Ritchie de Laet out for the rest of the season and the contract of Alan Hutton due to expire in June.

In contrast, Southampton can call upon either Cedric Soares or Cuco Martina on the right of their defence, and the Yorkshireman may struggle to secure first team football should he move to St. Mary’s.

Villa boss Steve Bruce admitted on Friday that he is hopeful of concluding a deal for Barnsley playmaker Conor Hourihane in the near future – another factor which could sway Bree’s decision.
