Midfielder Jack Rodwell has asked to leave Sunderland but won’t do it for free, according to reports.
Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell has so far declined the opportunity to have his contract at the Stadium of Light cancelled by mutual consent, according to The Chronicle.
The Chronicle reports that the 26-year-old and his agent have not responded to Sunderland’s proposal a fortnight later, despite the player having asked to leave this January.
Rodwell has only started one Championship match this season and The Chronicle understands that he has no future under new manager Chris Coleman, who is trying to steer the Black Cats clear of back-to-back relegations.
However, rather than jump at the chance of a fresh start to his underwhelming career, Rodwell seems to be content to sit on his £70,000 salary at Sunderland, adds The Chronicle.
Rodwell has 18 months left on his deal on Wearside, having joined from Manchester City in 2014, which would cost cash-strapped Sunderland £5.4m in wages if the former Everton youngster were to stay for the duration.
There is still a chance for Rodwell to accept Sunderland’s offer of a termination, but it appears as though he does not want to leave badly enough to sacrifice a potential payoff.
