According to a report by the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich Town are entitled to a 20% sell-on fee should Portsmouth’s Matt Clarke depart the club this month.

The highly-rated central defender joined Pompey from Ipswich as part of a player-plus-cash deal involving Adam Webster’s £700,000 move to Portman Road back in 2016.

Clarke has since established himself as one of the best players in League One this season, helping Portsmouth to currently top the League One table ahead of the likes of Sunderland and Barnsley.

Pompey manager Kenny Jackett told the Portsmouth News that he has no interest in selling the defender amid reported interest from Championship side Stoke City, but every player has a price.

Ipswich are currently bottom of the Championship table and seven points adrift of safety. Paul Lambert’s men have used up all of their available loans this month, leaving them in a tricky spot.

Do the Tractor Boys look to spend more than face value on a player now in a bid to try and secure their Championship status, or go with what they have and hope for the best?

The risk of stretching the budget may not be worth it as they find themselves facing such an uphill task. However, an injection from cash elsewhere may give them more flexibility ahead of the upcoming transfer deadline.

Clarke, 22, has enormous potential and should anybody come in for him now with Pompey in the midst of a promotion race, they would have to spend big and that would only benefit Ipswich more.
