According to The Express, Ipswich Town are preparing to offer Rangers a fee of £500,000 for striker Joe Garner after a hit-and-miss first season at Ibrox.

The Gers swooped to land Garner from Preston North End last summer, and the boyhood Lilywhites fan had become a Deepdale hero with 57 goals in 151 games for the club.

Rangers agreed to fork out £1.5million across two payments (STV) to sign Garner, with Mark Warburton convinced that he would be the man to lead the Rangers attack.

However, the 29-year-old has endured an up-and-down first season with Rangers, scoring ten goals in 37 appearances whilst accumulating 11 bookings, though with two goals in his last three games, he was showing signs of impressing under Pedro Caixinha.

Now, The Express report that Ipswich want to sign Garner, and are prepared to offer Rangers a cut-price fee of just £500,000 for his signature, with Tractor Boys manager Mick McCarthy something of a long-term fan of Garner.

It’s stated that Ipswich know that Rangers boss Caixinha wants funds to bring in his own players, and he could be tempted to sell Garner for the right price this summer.

Regardless, selling for £500,000 less than a year after agreeing a deal worth three times that amount would be questionable business from Rangers, who cannot afford to waste money if they intend to catch Celtic.

Ipswich’s interest will give Rangers plenty to think about, with Garner not quite living up to expectations, but also showing enough to suggest that he could be important next season – and Ipswich will hope that £500,000 can seal the deal.
