Everton had spent a large chunk of the transfer window trying to get a deal done for Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha.

According to the Daily Mail, Everton struggled to even get Crystal Palace to answer their calls over Wilfried Zaha at one stage in the transfer window.

Everton made Zaha their top target, but Palace were keen to keep hold of their star player.

The Eagles reportedly made it very difficult for Everton during the negotiations, with insiders saying that they were ‘dodging’ them as well as they possibly could.

Zaha ultimately handed in a transfer request to try and force through a move to Goodison Park, but was too little too late.

Everton were unable to get a last minute deal over the line, with Zaha now set to stay at Palace.

Everton opted to buy Alex Iwobi instead, but missing out on Zaha has to be considered a blow.

Wilfried Zaha of Palace is challenged by Oxford defender Rob Dickieat Kassam Stadium on July 21, 2018 in Oxford, England.

The 26-year-old would have enhanced the quality of Everton’s attacking options considerably, with his dribbling ability making him a major threat.

Palace now have to hope that Zaha’s disappointment at missing out on a move doesn’t affect his form too badly.

Zaha is Roy Hodgson’s side’s most important player, and if his performances dip then it could be hugely damaging to their chances of surviving.

To make matters more intriguing, Palace’s first game of the season comes against Everton tomorrow.
