According to MLS Soccer, Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty is now training with Liverpool, and he could join the Premier League giants in 2022.
What’s the story?
Well, big things are expected of the 17-year-old, who is the latest wonderkid to emerge from the Canadian production line after Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies.
MLS Soccer believe Marshall-Rutty is currently working at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre, after spending time at Arsenal’s London Colney base.
The teenage wonderkid has made 11 appearances for Toronto this year, with four coming as starts.
Marshall-Rutty became the youngest player in Toronto history to sign a homegrown contract when he penned his deal aged just 15.
The promising forward is also the youngest player to be called up to the Canadian national team.
MLS Soccer believe many European clubs are keen to sign Marshall-Rutty, including a handful of Champions League outfits.
Will Liverpool sign Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty?
In our view, the Reds have a good chance of signing the wonderkid, who was described as “incredibly talented” by Ali Curtis, Toronto’s former General Manager (Guardian).
However, any move to Europe will have to wait until the summer.
Marshall-Rutty has not yet turned 18, and doesn’t hold a European passport, so those interested in him will have to wait until his birthday in June.
However, MLS Soccer believe a deal can still be verbally agreed, before terms are finalised on the wonderkid’s 18th birthday.
Marshall-Rutty – a right-winger by trade – has also played at right-back, centre-forward and centre-midfield for Toronto, which should aid his development significantly (Transfermarkt).
Keep an eye on this situation – if the Canadian impresses Jürgen Klopp, he could well become a Liverpool player in 2022.
