West Ham United goalkeeper Roberto endured a disaster on Saturday.

According to The Mirror, West Ham United director of football Mario Husillos is still ‘adamant’ that Roberto will be a success at the club.

The Hammers saw Lukasz Fabianski go down with an injury last month, and that forced summer signing Roberto to become their new first-choice stopper in his absence.

Roberto joined the club from Espanyol over the summer, replacing Adrian as Fabianski’s backup, but Hammers fans would no doubt love to have Adrian back from Liverpool now.

Roberto endured a complete horror show against Burnley on Saturday, with a bizarre decision to punch a cross rather than catch it leading to the first goal, and his misery was compounded as he managed to punch the ball into his own net to seal a 3-0 defeat.

West Ham are in dire form right now, and Roberto’s jittery displays aren’t helping, but transfer chief Husillos seemingly has unwavering confidence in the Spaniard.

Husillos worked with Roberto at Malaga, hence his decision to sign him over the summer, and it’s now claimed that Husillos still thinks the 33-year-old will become a Premier League hit.

The report even notes that Husillos and Manuel Pellegrini actually wanted Roberto as first-choice in 2018, but when they couldn’t sign him, they got Fabianski instead, which is quite remarkable.

Husillos is in danger of losing his job according to The Guardian, and Hammers fans will be further questioning his judgement given this strange stance on Roberto, who is unlikely to improve all that much given his advancing years.
