According to Hull Live, Hull City are interested in bringing Tommy Elphick back to the club this summer, but the Tigers may have a difficult time trying to get the Aston Villa defender back through the door.
Nigel Adkins’ men are looking to build on an encouraging campaign in which they finished 13th in the Championship, 12 points off the play-off spots.
One of their most impressive performers during the season was Elphick, who spent the first half of the campaign on loan at the KCOM Stadium when it appeared that he had no future with the Villans.
But with the 31-year-old impressing and Dean Smith looking to bolster his options at the back during the January transfer window, Elphick was recalled and has gone on to make 11 appearances for Villa, who could be promoted to the Premier League on Monday when they face Derby County in the play-off final.
Should they seal promotion, it would be little surprise if Elphick – who cost £3 million, according to BBC Sport – was given the green light to leave. Birmingham Live reports that he is out of contract this summer, and he has played once since the end of February.
Hull Live reports that Hull are keen to sign Elphick again this summer, but the report notes that Adkins will have a tight budget and thus, a deal will be difficult to pull off.
It remains to be seen what Villa decide to do with Elphick’s contract. But if he does leave Villa Park, you would imagine that a number of Championship sides could be interested in the defender, which may make Hull’s task even tougher.
