After deal for Barnsley’s Andy Yiadom fell through, Huddersfield turn their attention to Sochaux right-back Mickael Alphonse.
Olympique de Marseille’s French midfielder Florian Thauvin (L) vies with FC Sochaux’ French defender Mickael Alphonse (R).
Huddersfield Town have turned their attention to Sochaux’s Mickael Alphonse, reports French outlet RMC, as their search for a new right-back continues.
Terriers manager David Wagner is having to look for alternatives in the position as cover for captain Tommy Smith after a deal to sign Andy Yiadom from Barnsley fell through.
Andy Yiadom(C) of Barnsley challenged by Anthony Knockaert (L) and Glenn Murray of Brighton & Hove Albion.
“To be honest, I don’t like to talk details because Andy Yiadom is not our player, but it wasn’t a financial reason – not between ourselves and the player and not between Barnsley and ourselves,” Wagner told the Huddersfield Examiner when explaining why Yiadom did not join the club.
“Everything else I think should be answered by Barnsley or the player as to why we were not able to come together, but it was not a financial reason.
“Everybody knows we have only Tommy Smith at right back at the moment and we are short on numbers in this position because Martin Cranie is injured.
“He [Cranie] is usually a player who can play this position, so this would be a position we are searching for, but only if we can do something that really helps us.
“We don’t have to rush. I think we will be prepared for the next weeks and hopefully find something that suits us.”
David Wagner, manager of Huddersfield Town, celebrates victory after the Premier League match against Newcastle United.
Well according to reports from France that man is Alphonse, who has also attracted interest from Sporting Lisbon and an unnamed Ligue 1 club this window.
However, Sochaux are determined not to sell the 28-year-old and his manager Peter Zeidler is also prepared to turn down any requests from the defender about leaving the Ligue 2 outfit.
Yet a move to the Premier League and Huddersfield could well be tempting for Alphonse, especially as the Yorkshire side have started so well this season following promotion from the Championship with a 100% record.
Wagner’s men following up a surprising 3-0 victory at Crystal Palace on the opening day of the campaign with a 1-0 home win over Newcastle United to leave them second in the table behind leaders Manchester United.
