The Spaniard has under two weeks remaining on his contract at Newcastle now, and time is running out on a compromise being made.
Benitez wants assurances made over transfers which Newcastle are yet to offer him.
However, Benitez has not given up hope yet and is said to privately still feel optimistic that a deal can be done.
If Newcastle could agree a contract with Benitez it would be a major boost for the Tynesiders.
Benitez is majorly popular at St. James’ Park, and Newcastle should be doing everything in their power to keep him.
If Benitez does walk away from Newcastle it could be a long summer for the Magpies, as many of their players are also linked with exits.
