Newcastle United will give Eddie Howe £50 million to spend in January as he looks to guide the team away from the drop zone, the Telegraph report.
Big spend coming?
Howe was officially named as Newcastle manager yesterday – and it is claimed that he has already told PIF where he wants to improve in January.
The word around Newcastle is that Howe will be given substantial funds, but they won’t be exorbitant.
And his reported £50 million budget does seem to fit that bill.
While Newcastle should be able to bring in two or three quality players with that sort of money, they will hardly be able to sign elite talent with those sort of funds just yet.
Newcastle’s new owner’s reticence to spend huge sums may come down to their status in the Premier League not being entirely secure.
Howe’s first task will be to take Newcastle out of the bottom three, which will be easier said than done.
The relegation battle
The Magpies have some tricky fixtures coming up and already are sat six points away from safety.
Newcastle are the only team in the Premier League who have failed to record a win to date.
It will, therefore, be crucial that Howe gets his recruitment right in January.
However, Newcastle are surely going to need to improve before the new year otherwise they could be cut adrift before they even get the chance to sign players.
Howe’s first game in charge will come after the international break, when Newcastle are due to take on Brentford.
The Magpies then face games against Arsenal, Norwich City and Burnley before a daunting festive period, where they will face many of the Premier League’s title contenders.
