According to The Mirror, Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley will give Henry Mauriss until August 14 to reach an agreement over the proposed takeover of the club.

With Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) withdrawing their proposal to buy Newcastle, American tycoon Mauriss is now reportedly interested in taking over the Premier League club.

The California-based CEO of Clear TV is willing to pay £350 million, and has been told by Ashley that he has until August 14 to reach an agreement, according to the report.

“Ashley and Mauriss’s teams are understood to have spoken at length over the past week, with Mauriss keen to assume control of the club as soon as possible,” adds the report in The Mirror.

Positive for Newcastle United

PIF’s decision to withdraw their proposal will have come as a massive blow and disappointment for Newcastle fans, but this latest reported development is certainly good news for them.

Newcastle are a massive club, and there is huge untapped potential there, and with the right investment and a clear long-term plan, the club could be challenging for European places.

Under Ashley, the Magpies have been relegated from the Premier League twice, and fans have wanted the club to show more ambition.

Newcastle finished 13th in the Premier League table this past season.
