Forza Roma claimed back in March that Everton were among other clubs interested in signing Sassuolo’s Davide Frattesi.
The young Italian midfielder is currently on loan at Empoli, where he has had an impressive campaign this season.
The report from March claimed that Ancelotti’s scouts had brought back positive reports about Frattesi but Everton weren’t the only side to have shown an interest.
Juventus were also lurking according to the report but the front runners were Roma. The capital city club inserted a buy-back clause in his contract when they sold him to Sassuolo back in 2017.
Roma were expected to trigger their £10.7 million option to sign him but that longer seems to be the case.
Forza Roma have claimed now that the Giallorossi will find it difficult to fork out his redemption fee. They might have to renegotiate the fee with Sassuolo but they might blow up the deal altogether.
This opens up a second opportunity for Everton to sign Frattesi. Ancelotti reportedly likes the profile of his compatriot and he could well be a solid addition to the squad for next season.
Gylfi Sigurdsson’s performances have been poor this campaign and it is time that Everton prepare a succession plan for when he decides to leave.
Frattesi is more of number eight than a natural 10 like Sigurdsson but he would slot in perfectly in Ancelotti’s preferred 4-4-2 system.
It will be interesting to see if Everton actually pursue their interest in Frattesi this summer but the least they can do is keep an eye on his situation.
