Former Glasgow Rangers defender Henning Berg is keen on taking the Ibrox job, according to reports.

According to a report from the Daily Record, Henning Berg is keen on becoming Pedro Caixinha’s permanent successor at Rangers 13 years after leaving Ibrox as a player.

The Gers’ manager search continues despite the fact that the Portuguese was dismissed last month, with the Scottish Premiership side ready to consider all applications.

The Record reports that that has prompted Berg to apply for the job – but Rangers are said to still prefer trying to find a British manager with Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes still the favourite for the post.

Berg has endured a very turbulent managerial career to date. He led Legia Warsaw to the title in Poland and the Polish Cup one year later, but he has been dismissed from his last four jobs, and is currently out of work.

The 48-year-old is yet to reach 100 games as a manager in any of his jobs, and of course, endured a miserable time at Blackburn, being sacked after just 10 games – though he is unlikely to be blamed for many of the problems at Ewood Park in recent years.

He will certainly have an idea of what managing a club on Rangers’ scale will be like however, having spent his final year as a player at Ibrox, making 30 appearances for the Gers in total before hanging up his boots in 2004.

And he has overseen a victory over Celtic as a manager when Legia Warsaw beat the Hoops – managed by Ronny Deila at the time – 6-1 on aggregate in a Champions League qualifying game, only for the Polish side to be thrown out for fielding an ineligible player, as reported by the Record.

Despite his credentials, it would surely be a massive gamble for Rangers to appoint Berg. And based on the fact that the Caixinha gamble simply did not work out, it would be a surprise if they were willing to take another risk at this stage.

Should Berg be considered as Rangers manager?
