According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Helder Costa is now considered to be Leeds United’s number one transfer target this summer.
Costa, 25, was a key part of Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League in 2018, but struggled to make an impact in the top flight, registering just one goal and two assists.
The Portuguese wide man may be available this summer after Nuno Espirito Santo switched to a 3-4-1-2 system, as Costa seemingly doesn’t have a role in that setup – and he could drop back down the Championship.
Leeds have been linked with Costa for a couple of weeks now, and it’s believed that they’ve now made him their number one target, focusing all their efforts on bringing him to Elland Road.
Leeds are in the market for at least a couple of wingers having missed out on Daniel James earlier this year, whilst Jack Harrison has returned to Manchester City and Jack Clarke may yet leave this summer.
In terms of a statement signing, Costa would be exactly that for Leeds. In his two Championship campaigns, Costa racked up 15 goals and 14 assists, becoming a star at Molineux.
The Premier League was seemingly a step too far for him, but he’s exactly the sort of winger to get fans off their seats in the Championship, bringing even more creativity to Marcelo Bielsa’s exciting team.
A permanent deal is out of the question for a player Wolves paid £13million (BBC) for just two years ago, but a loan move would still benefit Leeds greatly – and fans will be hoping a deal can be struck sooner rather than later.
