Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool may be about to battle over the signature of Hee-chan Hwang, according to reports.

Heading into the final few games of the season, it appears that the battle for third in the Premier League is going to come down to Liverpool and Tottenham with one point separating the two with Mauricio Pochettino’s men also boasting a game in hand – and it appears that the higher position in the table may not be the only battle the two sides engage in over the coming months.

According to the London Evening Standard, Spurs now face competition from Liverpool for the signature of Red Bull Salzburg striker Hee-chan Hwang, who Pochettino has seemingly earmarked as the latest player he wishes to try as Harry Kane’s understudy.

The Standard reports that Fernando Llorente is likely to leave at the end of the campaign, and it appears that Tottenham are keen on the 22-year-old who is likely to cost around £13 million and is interested in the idea of linking up with international teammate Heung-min Son at Spurs.

However, the Standard adds that Liverpool are also monitoring his situation, as are teams from Germany and Spain, so it appears that Pochettino may not have a smooth ride trying to bag his signature despite the forward’s interest in joining Tottenham.

Jurgen Klopp, Manager of Liverpool speaks with the media during a press conference at Anfield on April 23, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

Hwang may not be the kind of signing that captures the imagination straight away, but the calibre of clubs chasing him certainly provides an indication as to how highly he is rated.

It was during his time at Salzburg that Sadio Mane earned a Premier League move as Southampton landed him. The Saints paid a similar amount of money – £11.8 million, according to the Daily Mail – for Mane, who was the same age that Hwang is now.

And while that means little regarding the South Korean’s chances of proving a success if he does come to England, it does show that there is a precedent for a somewhat initially-underwhelming deal to prove a real masterstroke if everything falls into place.
