Steven Naismith is to travel to England on Friday to have his injured knee examined by a specialist, according to reports.
The Hearts loanee, who is on the books at Norwich City, was substituted at half time during last week’s Scottish Premiership match with Celtic at Tynecastle Park due to knee pain.
Jambos boss Craig Levein was hoping to have Naismith available for Monday night’s 1-1 Scottish Cup quarter-final draw against Partick Thistle, but he wasn’t fit enough to make the squad.
According to Edinburgh Live, the 32-year-old is to visit the same surgeon who operated on him last year, when he suffered a torn cartilage during October’s Scottish League Cup semi-final against Celtic.
The report adds that parent club Norwich will be overseeing Naismith’s treatment, with the Edinburgh side hoping his injury is not too serious.
Hearts have already lost the services of one loanee for the rest of the campaign in the shape of Manchester United ace Demetri Mitchell, having damaged the lateral meniscus in his knee during the Scottish Cup fifth round win over Auchinleck Talbot.
Naismith’s loan deal at Tynecastle expires in May and, with his Norwich contract expiring the following month, he then becomes a free agent.
