Whelan could resume his career north of the border after leaving Aston Villa.

Hearts have opened talks to sign the released Aston Villa midfielder, Glenn Whelan, according to the Scottish Sun.
Whelan appeared 38 times for Aston Villa in all competitions, but failed to earn a new deal with the Championship play-off winners.
The 35-year-old had been linked with an immediate return to England’s second tier, with Blackburn Rovers, Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic all credited with an interest.
But a move north of the border could now be on the cards, with the Scottish Sun reporting that further talks will take place tomorrow (Saturday) as Hearts hope to conclude a deal ahead of Sunday’s Premiership opener against Aberdeen.

Whelan, who spent two seasons on Aston Villa’s books, would reunite with his former Sheffield Wednesday teammate, Steven MacLean, at Hearts.
Despite his Championship spells with Aston Villa and Wednesday, the Republic of Ireland international spent the bulk of his career playing Premier League football for Stoke City.
