According to The Express, Southampton want to bring back Adam Lallana as a replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

It’s claimed that Ralph Hasenhuttl wants to bring Lallana home to St Mary’s Stadium, bringing him into the Southampton midfield.

Lallana is out of contract at Liverpool this summer, and will be leaving for free. Southampton hope to sign him, but face competition from Brighton, Burnley and Leicester.

The 32-year-old came up through the Southampton ranks having signed from Bournemouth in 2000, and he bagged 60 goals in 265 games for the Saints.

Lallana left for Liverpool in 2014, but having become a Premier League, European and World champion at Anfield, he could now return to the South Coast.

This report brings even more confusion to the Hojbjerg situation though. It’s been difficult to keep up with the saga, but this report states that he is expected to join Everton in the coming days.

However, The Liverpool Echo claim that Hojbjerg has told Everton that he wants to join Spurs, and The Telegraph believe that Hojbjerg will snub Everton and is now expected to be Tottenham-bound after all.

Hojbjerg will be moving on for around £25million either way, and with Lallana able to join for free, Southampton can spend in other areas.

Hojbjerg is more combative than the technically-gifted Lallana, but having seen Oriol Romeu impress lately, Hasenhuttl may have plans to bring in Lallana to fill Hojbjerg’s role as a leader more than a direct on-pitch replacement.
