Liverpool are reportedly set to sign Fulham’s Harvey Elliott.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool will immediately thrust imminent signing Harvey Elliott into the first-team fold once he completes his move from Fulham.
The Reds have already secured one youngster in 17-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg, and now look set to land another in Fulham’s Elliott.
Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have all been pursuing Elliott, who is the youngest player to ever feature in the Premier League, at 16 years and 30 days.
The attacking midfielder has rejected a new deal at Fulham and is now able to move on, with Liverpool poised to sign him a deal which will see them pay ‘handsome’ compensation.
More intriguingly though, it’s believed that Jurgen Klopp wants to put Elliott straight into the first-team fold, rather than sending him to the Under-18’s or Under-23’s.
Now, that doesn’t mean that Elliott will go straight into competing for a starting role. That would be a hugely premature decision, even if the teenager is highly rated.
Instead, it’s a move intended to give Elliott the chance to train alongside top players. Liverpool have made a similar decision with Van den Berg, seemingly believing that leaving the duo with players of the same age won’t aid their development.
Klopp’s decision is hugely exciting, and an indication of how highly they rate Elliott, that they almost think he’s already too good for age-restricted football, and we may well see Elliott in cup games or on the bench if needed next season.
