According to The Mirror, Harry Redknapp is a leading contender for the Birmingham City job following Gianfranco Zola’s resignation.

The Blues lost 2-0 at home to Burton Albion on Monday afternoon, leaving them just three points clear of the Championship relegation zone with three games to play.

After Monday’s defeat, Italian boss Gianfranco Zola decided that his time was up, and resigned as Birmingham manager, bringing an end to his ill-fated spell in the St. Andrews dugout.

Bizarrely, Birmingham’s Chinese owners Billion Trophy Asia Limited decided to sack manager Gary Rowett, despite the fact that the Blues were seventh in the Championship table and just three points off third place.

Since then, Zola has taken charge, won just two games and resigned from his post, whilst Rowett has already won three games in six since becoming Derby County boss last month, highlighting how bad Birmingham’s decision was.

Now, Birmingham must find a manager to take over and keep the club in the Championship, with The Mirror reporting that Harry Redknapp is one of the leading contenders for the post.

Redknapp, 70, has been out of management since leaving Queens Park Rangers in 2015, and has turned his hand to punditry rather than making a return to management.

Now, the former West Ham, Portsmouth, Southampton and Tottenham boss is reportedly on Birmingham’s shortlist to replace Zola, in what would be something of a coup – but he hasn’t managed in the Championship since 2014, and that wasn’t a relegation battle.

With local rivals Aston Villa to come this weekend and time running out on the season, Birmingham need a quick solution, with Redknapp seemingly one of the early favourites, along with ex-Derby and Leicester manager Nigel Pearson.
