According to The Daily Mail, Everton are plotting a new contract for playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson – months after being open to selling him.
It’s claimed that Sigurdsson has played his way back into Carlo Ancelotti’s plans, and could now land a new contract to stay at Goodison Park.
Sigurdsson still has 18 months left on the five-year deal he signed in 2017, but Everton seem tempted to make sure he doesn’t get into the final year.
Spotrac claim that the Icelandic midfielder earns £100,000-a-week at Everton, and it looks like the Toffees will at least renew that deal, if not improve it.
The 31-year-old has often been accused of not quite living up to his billing since arriving from Swansea, and The Times reported in September that Everton were willing to sell him.
Yet with James Rodriguez out injured of late, Sigurdsson has stepped up as Everton’s playmaker, bagging two goals and two assists in 15 games this season.
An extra year or two would take Sigurdsson into his mid-30’s at Everton, and few could have predicted that just a matter of months ago.
