According to The Daily Mail, Gus Poyet has rejected the chance to return to Sunderland as their new manager.
It’s claimed that the Uruguayan was targeted as Sunderland’s top choice to replace Phil Parkinson, who lost his job on Sunday.
Approaches were allegedly made towards Poyet, but he has rejected a return to the Stadium of Light as he pursues a job at a higher level.
Poyet seemingly doesn’t fancy dropping into League One right now, meaning a stunning return to Wearside won’t be happening.
Poyet became Sunderland boss back in October 2013, replacing Paolo Di Canio having impressed during his stint in charge of Brighton and Hove Albion.
The 53-year-old left in March 2015, and has since had brief stints with AEK Athens, Real Betis, Shanghai Shenhua and Bordeaux particularly impressing with AEK and Bordeaux having won more than 60% of his games with the two clubs.

He has now been out of management for more than two years, but is seemingly prepared to wait for the right job rather than jumping back in at League One level.
That means Sunderland will have to look elsewhere, unless Poyet has a shock change of heart in the coming days.
