Manchester City are reportedly prioritising a defensive midfielder this summer.

According to The Independent, Manchester City are prioritising the signing of a new holding midfielder this summer – and Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl is now a top target.
Pep Guardiola’s men may have endured a terrible week with two defeats to Liverpool, knocking them out of the Champions League, with a home defeat to Manchester United sandwiched in between.

City will still walk towards the Premier League title, but Guardiola now has food for thought over his summer transfer business, with City still clearly having room for improvement.
With Fernandinho now approaching 33, finding a holding midfielder to offer cover for the Brazilian and eventually replace him has to be a priority, and Guardiola seemingly has a top target in mind.
City have long been linked with a move for Shakhtar Donetsk star Fred, but The Independent now report that Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl is now more likely to join City than the Brazilian.

Weigl, 22, has made more than 100 appearances for Dortmund following a 2015 move from 1860 Munich, and has impressed with his technique and passing range, resembling much more of a Sergio Busquets-type player rather than a Fernandinho.
Dortmund sold Ilkay Gundogan to City in 2016 and may now sell another midfielder to City this summer in Weigl, with Guardiola moving away from Fred towards the German international.
