According to The Scottish Sun, Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie has chosen a move to Wigan Athletic despite late interest from Sunderland.

Shinnie, 27, has racked up more than 150 appearances for Aberdeen since arriving from Inverness Caledonian Thistle in January 2015, and became captain in 2017.

Initially a left back, Shinnie has become a holding midfield player in recent years, and has been the heartbeat of the Aberdeen side for four years now.

However, Shinnie is out of contract at the end of the season, and will be leaving his hometown club for a move to England this summer.

The Scottish Sun report that Shinnie is all set to sign a pre-contract agreement with Wigan Athletic, choosing to join the Championship side on a free transfer in July.

It’s added that Sunderland made a late bid to sign Shinnie to a similar deal, but he chose the Latics instead, leaving Jack Ross disappointed.

Ross will have been familiar with Shinnie from their time in Scotland, with the versatile ace a Scotland international having picked up four caps to date.

Shinnie would have been a bargain signing for Sunderland, but barring a late twist in the tale, he looks to have chosen the DW Stadium over a move to Wearside, leaving Ross to go back to the drawing board.
