Glasgow Rangers are reportedly on the verge of welcoming Graeme Murty back to Ibrox following his second spell as interim boss.

Murty has been attached to the Light Blues since 2016, spending much of that time in charge of the club’s development side. He did step up to take interim charge of the senior side when Mark Warburton left in 2017 and did a very impressive job before handing the role over to Pedro Caixinha.

It was under Murty that the side avoided defeat against their bitter rivals for the first time following their promotion to the Scottish Premiership, and he stepped into the role once again when Caixinha’s disappointing tenure came to an end in October. Once again, he oversaw the Gers securing a point at Parkhead in December.
And after a stunning run of victories at the start of this year, it did appear that Rangers may be one Old Firm win away from setting up a title race and Murty may be in serious contention to keep the job long-term. Unfortunately, the Gers were beaten at Ibrox and any hopes of ending Celtic’s dominance were quickly dashed when the Hoops claimed 4-0 and 5-0 victories over Rangers in the space of a fortnight. It surprised no-one that Murty was relieved of his duties with the first-team after the latter loss.
What may surprise some however, is that the Record is now reporting that Murty is now set to return to his role with the development side after meeting with the club on Tuesday.

Murty did some very good work with the youngsters at Auchenhowie, but there is a chance that his return may not actually be received overwhelmingly positively.
The development squad started the campaign in terrible form, but their results picked up significantly around the turn of the year – and that coincided with Murty’s promotion to the first-team, so some may feel – perhaps unfairly – that handing him another chance may not be the best move.
