Rangers boss Gerrard is already plotting transfers for this summer, when the Light Blues intend to bring more quality to Ibrox.
And Rangers have set their sights on Rennes defender Mexer, who is available on a free in the summer.
Mexer’s contract with Rennes is due to expire in just over a month’s time, with Rangers keen to bring him to Glasgow.
The Mozambique international has been a regular for Rennes this term, making 26 appearances in Ligue 1.
Rangers are thought to be eager to strengthen in the centre of their defence, as Gerrard looks to improve his backline.
Rangers already have a number of options in defence, but with Joe Worrall set to return to Nottingham Forest at the end of his loan, Gerrard needs to add more quality in the summer.
